Remove Default Widget From Everything

So there are a few posts on this forum regarding this but none with actual solutions. I tried adding

.home #secondary {
display: none;
}

to my stylesheet and it only removed it from the footer of the homepage, not from the top left of all my other pages.

I tried adding a plain text widget with no text added but that just makes it invisible so everything else on my page is off center. There has got to to be a way to remove this widget entirely. Great theme, appreciate the help, thanks!
