Plugins do not function

I’ve uploaded plugins to the correct folder wp-content/plugins, but the ones I really need to function are suddenly not being recognized through admin’,so I cannot activate them. There is only so much chmod-ing I can do. Is there something I’m missing here? At the start of the week I was merrily uploading plugins and testing them, now almost nothing functions apart from Askimet. Any ideas?
