Child Theme mistaken for another

We just had an interesting issue I’d not seen before. We had a customer site and as per normal, we used a child theme. However WordPress identified the child theme (version 1.0) as a theme hosted here (Version 1.06) and the customer decided to update which of course, broke everything.

We ‘fixed’ this by changing the name of the child theme (with no luck) and resorted to changing the version to a number significantly bigger that the hosted theme.

However, how do you prevent this from happening and if it does, how do you tell WordPress that this is not the same theme?
