There are already many free page counters. Why re-invent the wheel on such a simple thing?

just wondering if the devs has any plan including them in wp. it eliminates the need for a thrid party solution, and it can’t hurt wp by having its own builtin counter, can it?

well there are a zillion things i had like wp to have by default. u surely cant please everyone. its already getting bulky :p when compared to textpattern!
CG-Referer has the ability to track sitewide unique-IP visits, which I use on CHAITGEAR for real daily/weekly/monthly stats numbers. I’ve also been using statcounter for 6 mos, but will likely be dumping it soon as CG-R gives accurate tracking rather than cookie-based erroneous ‘few hour window’ stuff. Also because page counters aren’t that useful for end users, and CG-R gives a lot of ‘admin level’ stats pages.
There’s also a number of hacks here for doing per-post view tracking (I made a custom one myself), but those generally are based on pageviews and have no IP/uniqueness tracking (neither does mine…) as that takes too much horsepower.
Depends on what you’re looking to use it for really. 😉
