URL replace in moving from DEV – Breaks site.

We are moving the new build of our site from dev. to the public domain but are having great difficulty replacing the urls in the custom page types. In particular the ones for the cover art of the page. A global replace for the URL in the database broke the content that is present. I have reverted that change so that the site is working but we need this fixed so we’re not bouncing people back to the dev site. Please advise.
