Changing home page info

Please forgive the probably very amateur nature of my query – I’m new to WordPress.

I’m building a site with the Alice theme and wondered if there was a way to change the home page, so that the info below the header image isn’t displayed as a blog (with the date, and entered as a post)? I’m looking to just put some basic info on there to tell visitors what the site is for – and to have the actual blog posts under the Blog section (have already put this into the navigation menu at the top).
