Sometimes plugins can interfere with login. Try logging into your site via FTP or hosting account file manager, navigating to wp-content/plugins, and renaming that directory to pluginsXX. This will not hurt your site at all, but will deactivate all your plugins, so that if any of them are causing an issue, you should be able to log in. If you are able to get in, reactivate the plugins one by one to figure out which one is causing the problem.

If renaming the plugins folder doesn’t work, try going to wp-content/themes, and renaming the folder with your active theme (you can just add XX to it like above). This will force your site to revert to the default WP theme (TwentyFifteen), and if your theme is causing this issue, you should be able to log in.

If neither of these help, let us know, and we can suggest more options.

Thanks Bet, I eventually found the answer and it was pretty much what you are saying. It was the iTheme Security plugin. Seemingly it caused the same issue for a lot of people. I disabled it by doing what you said, then deleted it and have wordfecnce now. Much better!
    Thank you!

Glad you got it figured out!

Sometimes those security plugins can be tricky in terms of their settings– it could have been a conflict with your theme or other plugins, or that the settings locked you out. (Putting this here mostly for others in the future who may have a similar issue. 🙂
