I have both categories and sub-categories on my WordPress page. Say for instance I’m writing an article about a computer program. I have the categories structure that is:

    Computers > Software
    Computers > Hardware

Up until now I have been posting such an article in both the Computer (main category) and Software (subcategory) category. Is this a good way to do it? I do have articles that are listed in more than two categories as well. Say that the example also has something to do with connecting your computer to a TV. Then the whole categorisation are (with the article tagged in every category.)

    Computers > Software
    Sound & Picture > Connectivity

That is four categories in total. Is that I stupid way to go by it?
I notice that if I uncheck the main categories for the posts and only leave them in the subcategories, they still show up when browsing the main category. So in that sense the main category seems unnecessary to even have checked.

Which way is the correct way to do it?

    Thanks
    /Chris

The real answer lies with how you want to structure your site content.

Try this WP Beginner article. Amongst other things it says:

Categories are meant for broad grouping of your posts. Think of these as general topics or the table of contents for your site. Categories are there to help identify what your blog is really about. It is to assist readers finding the right type of content on your site. Categories are hierarchical, so you can sub-categories.

Tags are meant to describe specific details of your posts. Think of these as your site’s index words. They are the micro-data that you can use to micro-categorize your content. Tags are not hierarchical.

    Thank you for the answer.

But are there any recommendations for wether one should place a post both in the main category and also in the sub category, or only in the subcategory (having the main category unchecked)?
