Groups within tabs?

I have a few image groups that are nested inside tabs we are using for second-level navigation. The lightbox works, but it is not grouping images into galleries. I suspect the [group] ‘shortcode’ element is being filtered out due to the tabs. Any way to make this work gallery-style inside the tabs?
