I’ve tested this on my own installation and I couldn’t recreate the issue. With only WP Smush activated the word count was still working, see screenshot

Could you please try deactivating all other plugins aside from Smush and switch to one of the default wordpress themes to check for possible conflicts. You can follow the steps from the flowchart below:

It appears something with the WP theme, but I could isolate the problem.
I need the theme as it is. Hope I return to the plugin soon.

Glad you managed to find where is the conflict. Since this is related to the theme that you’re using and everything works on the default WP theme I’d strongly suggest contacting theme authors so they can take a look.
