• Though I have been blindly feeling my way through web design for about a year now, I still don’t know some terminology so bear with me.

I have been getting notifications of “broken links” in my Pages, and when I go to find them, they aren’t visible in the “Visual” tab, but the “text” tab. I can see a <div> class containing the links, and they are usually for loans, airlines, etc, which in my mind screams spam.

I understand how to get rid of them, but how can i prevent this and why is it happening?

I did not build this website. I merely handle upkeep.

    Thanks!!

    First off, try:
    – Use this plugin to check for exploits and malware:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/quttera-web-malware-scanner/
    – alternately, use online Scuri scanner:
    http://sitecheck.sucuri.net/scanner/

    report back the results

    Thank you!!

Neither one found any suspicious pages or files.

I’ve pretty much cleaned up the site at this point. The site was built in 2009, and no one has really touched it since then, so I am having quite the time updating…

Mostly looking for an explanation more than a solution, or tips on how to prevent this?

    – I think first you need to find out where its coming from before you can prevent it.
    – deactivating ALL plugins temporarily to see if this resolves the problem (plugin functions can interfere). If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s).
    – If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the unedited WordPress default theme for a moment using the WP dashboard to rule out any theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

Thank you so much! I’ll try all of that. 🙂
