You have Akismet installed, but did you activate the API key?
Click on the Akismet settings and make sure that you have gotten an API key. If not, here are basic instructions on how to do so: https://codex.wordpress.org/Akismet#Setting_Up_Akismet

I am new to WordPress so I apologise if this is an obvious question.
I have a website that has been running for about 9 months and this week I started to get a large number of strange comments. They are general comments that appear to be referring to another site and linked to Facebook accounts such as
“forward two years and I have had the honour of phiorgoaphtng their growing family twice see last years family session …”
Often with spelling mistakes. Are these just auto generated SPAM that have similar themes to my website. Strange that they only just started this week.
