Sidebar and Social Media

I am new to wordpress. I can’t get any sidebars to show up. What do I need to do to get a left sidebar to show. I see where it lets me add widgets, but when I do that My sidebar doesn’t show. I already went into the pages and made sure that left sidebar was available. please help. Also, when I enter the social media info I do not see those populate anywhere, where to they show?
