So sorry you’re having trouble. I know it’s maddening when something major goes wrong. I doubt that your site has been lost though.

What did you update, WP? a plugin?

The theme or WordPress? It just had an “Update available” button in Appearance. I can see the pages still in there, but all formatting has been lost and I’d actually hired someone I to code the theme for me after I purchased it. Now nothing is there – the home page was supposed to have a slider and it’s all gone, there’s nothing there; nothing on the pages is there (cool fonts, social icons etc.). I had to put back into construction mode as nothing that came with the theme is actually there any more

If the person you hired to do your customizing didn’t use a child theme for the customization, and you updated the theme, those customizations will be lost. Do you have a back up on your hosting account?

To see if you have a child theme installed, go to your dashboard -> appearance -> what themes are installed, particularly is there a theme that says it’s a child theme? What theme is active?

If you updated the theme, and the theme had some changes made, the changes would be over-written by the new themes files. But when you say “totally erased” do you mean everything, or is it that the content is thre but it doens’t look the way that it did?

As you’ve said that it’s a purchased theme, it may not be that because the vast majority of purchased themes don’t get updates.

Did you ask the person that you hired what went wrong, because if they did the job right there normally shouldn’t be that sort of issue.

I can’t say for sure, but it sounds like you bought the theme, someone changed it for you, and with an update to the original theme the changes were lost. (Your developer should have used a child theme to avoid this.)

Can you get a new copy from the developer? Then you can just replace the theme.

You guys are fast! (Or I’m slow.)

    @catacaustic – That’s a good point that hadn’t occurred to me.

    Some do.
If there is a child theme, it may have been broken by the update and became inactive also. Although that is rare.

Through Envato they had the option to have a freelancer install it all for you. I purchased the theme there.

It looks like the theme itself was updated. In dashboard – appearance – the button to update it was on the theme itself. This afternoon there was no image by the updated theme on the appearance page; now there is. So I think I updated that.

It doesn’t say if it’s a child theme or not. But all the widgets and slider etc. have gone and are just replaced by random code e.g.

    [photo_wall animation=”random” interval=”1600″ max_step=”3″]

    [intro]
    Hi. I’m Emily.
    I capture [rotate_words titles=”magic.,moments.,love.,imagination.,fairytales.,stories.,beauty.” interval=”1600″][/intro]

Then it’s your theme that’s been updated, and any modifications that were made to that theme have bene lost.

However, seeing what you’ve got there, that’s some shortcodes that are not available any longer, so unless your developer has added these in a scustom shortcodes, they should still be working, unless the theme’s been broken in the latest version.

You really need to be asking the developer, and the themes vendor/author, as we don’t know how the theme was coded, what modifications where done, or what can be done to change it back. Commercial themes are not supported here because we don’t have access to the source code, which means that anything that we could offer woudl be an idea at most, but no concrete solutions.

On the list of themes, are there 2 that have the same name, but the 2nd one has “child” as part of the theme? Your main theme will usually have an image or something, the child will just show as a blank box with a name.

When you contact your developer, tell him to use a CHILD THEME for your CSS and PHP customizations.
