What theme are you using? Where did you get t from? Keep in mind not all themes are built the same and these forums don’t support commercial themes.

One of the first things you will need to do is create a child theme.

Someone else created the site for us a few years ago, and used “theme 18496”, which I haven’t been able to find.

My understanding of WordPress is minimal, at best, and my comfort level with creating a child theme is tempered by the fear I will lose the website altogether.

Without creating a child theme to start, I assume that I can’t really modify anything, is that right?

You can modify. The reason it is recommended is so that if the theme ever gets updated you won’t lose any modifications.

If you are able to try and contact the theme’s developer otherwise you may have to resort to learning about theme development or hiring somebody.

Worst case scenario, you learn how not to do things. 🙂
