• Hi everyone,

I’ve recently changed the permalink structure for my blog from /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/
    to just /%postname%/
All my posts that showed up in Google search still have the old structure in the URL. Is there a way to “notify Google” or other search engines of the change?

Someone have mentioned something about changing the .htaccess file…does anyone know what I should put in it?

    Thanks!

  • You want to use the Permalink Redirect Plugin. Since v0.7 it’s absolutely simple to redirect the old permalink structure to the new one.

Hey thanks for the link. I still have one question though: I did a search on Google and saw Google has completely reduced my (broken) link from

    http://mywebsite/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/
    to just

    http://mywebsite
whereas My current permalink structure is
    http://mywebsite/%postname%

Would the Permalink Redirect Plugin still work?

I should’ve done this immediately when I noticed the problem…darn procrastination:(

Nope, but google needs some time to adept to your new permalink structure. Just wait a few days, and google will show the correct links. The reason why it just finds you root website is most probably, that it updates the front page more frequently than your posts. Plugin or not… the same thing would have happened with google. Patience… 🙂

As for your question, it wouldn’t make much sense to use the plugin just for google now, but it’d be useful, if some other pages contain links to your posts with the old permalink structure.

    Hi there,

I tried a couple of my old links…when I click the link it would take 1 to 3 minutes before my page would load, and it still shows the homepage, instead of the page it’s suppose to go to…example:
    http://crypticclarity.com/2007/06/01/the-simpsons-episode-g33k-linuxtag-comes-to-springsfield/
    doesn’t go to
    http://crypticclarity.com/the-simpsons-episode-g33k-linuxtag-comes-to-springsfield/
although the address does show up correctly in the browser, but only crypticclarity.com gets displayed…

Is this maybe a problem with the WordPress Theme I use? Before I installed the plugin every wrong link would point to the home page, just like now, except it doesn’t take 1 to 3 minutes to load…should I create a “404 File Not Found” page for the plugin to work?

Exactly what old permalink structue did you enter in options -> permalink redirect?

I’m such a moron, I didn’t realize I had to do that (insert an emoticon where I beat my head with a hammer)…

Things are working now, Thanks Sivar!

Glad I could help. I think your problem is common enough to deserve a “resolved” marking ;).
