    Hi there,

This is my first time writing something on a forum, so I hope I am doing everything correctly.

A few years ago I started my portfolio website and since then I have changed the domain name (twice) succesfully (I used the instructions on http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress). When I tried to make some room in my hosting account by removing my first ever WordPress install in Installatron, I suddenly got the the message “Error establishing a database connection” when visiting the website. I get the same message when trying to enter the page admin. How can it be that my current website is still dependent (?) on that first install? How can I fix this problem? I read something about changing the info on the wp-config.php, would that be the solution to this problem?

I hope someone can help me with this problem, thank you so much in advance!

p.s. All (previous) domain names are hosted on the same server.

  • Yes, update your wp-config.php with current information.

First of all: thanks for your reply!

I have looked at that file – in the folder of the current website – but everything seems in order. Or do I need to update the wp.config files in the installments of the older domains? If so, how do I do this in a way that enables me to then delete these old installments without damaging the database?

Did you do all the installs using just one database?

My experience is the only way to get that message is an error in the wp-config.php file. It should be in the root directory – where you have wp installed. I am not familiar with Installatron. Normally to uninstall wp from a site you would just delete all the files and delete the database.

Oh dear, I have no idea. As far as I can see there are different ‘folders’ in the myPHP with each of them having one of the installments.

About that wp-config.php: since my first domain name have installed wordpress on three different domains in total (and transferred it from the first to the second to the third… deleting that first is giving this error). So I have three wp-config.php files on my server. In which of them would be the problem? The one in the last and current installment looks fine… :/

Well, I have looked at all the different wp-config.php files and the one that seemed to work was the one that referenced to database no.4…. weird thing is that in myPHP there is no such thing as database no.4!

Now I have changed the info in the config file tot no.4 and everything works again. How is this possible?!

It has to be there if your blog is working but I am glad you are back up.

You could ask your hosts about the database.

Yeah, I probably should. Have no idea why it worked like it did…. :p

    Thanks for helping out though!
