• I want to upgrade to the latest version but I have a few questions. From what I gather the newest version is basically a redesign of the admin interface. My web host says that when I upgrade it will overwrite all my modifications. After the upgrade, can I replace the overwritten files with my backed up copies or will I need to “re-customize” my blog?”

    Thanks,

    Bernie

  • If you’ve made changes to your core files, like those in wp-admin or wp-includes then you would need ‘deal with those’ after the upgrade.

If you are discussing your theme (the way your blog looks to visitors) then you may have to fix certain things in your theme if your theme makes use of obsoleted Template Tags. For instance you might need to change from using wp_get_linksname to using wp_list_bookmarks.

If you have backups of your WordPress files and database you will always have a fall-back position.

Thanks. I was referring to my theme.

The instructions for manual upgrade always say: do NOT delete/over-write your wp-content folder, where all your custom themes, plugins and uploads may reside.
While it is true, consider checking whether you have the latest versions of plugins used and, if necessary, replace them.

Be aware that some “one-click” upgrades offered by hosts might over-write everything!
