• I have a frustrating, occasional problem.

I am running two WordPress MUs on two different hosts. One site on each MU will occasionally, about 1 in 10 times show up as the mobile version in the browser. I’ve seen it happen Safari, Firefox and Chrome with Chrome being the most common.

Changing themes does not seem to resolve the issue. My page speed is relatively fast, and I’m running the QuickCache Pro plugin across all sites in the MU.

These two sites are both running the exact same set of plugins as three other sites. These three sites have no issues at all. One of those sites even shares the same theme with one of the (occasionally) broken sites.

The two “broken” sites are http://GirlGamer.org and http://EVintagePhoto.com. Working sites are http://PNWPhotoblog.com, http://Hamell.net, http://AnimeGirl.org (on same server as GirlGamer.org) and http://YLYLFunny.com. The Girl Gamer site currently has a “pro” responsive theme loaded as part of my troubleshooting steps.

Anyone have any ideas on what may be causing the problem? Caching issue?

  • Have you tried clearing your cache?

    Very first thing I tried.

Then I would assume you have tried deactivating all of your plugins and switching to the default Twenty Fifteen theme?

As far as can be done, considering its MU and many of these sites are in production, yes.
That has not been conclusive though as the problem is not consistent.

It feels like it might be related to Jetpack’s mobile theme. But the fact that it is coming up in Browser windows seems like the problem is somewhere else. The mobile theme should only come into play if WordPress did not read the browser settings correctly. Correct?

I just tested it in Internet Explorer on my Windows 7 and couldn’t get it to happen.

It feels like it might be related to Jetpack’s mobile theme.

Do you have JetPack mobile enabled on those sites?

Do you have JetPack mobile enabled on those sites?

It is enabled on every single site listed above.

Are those not responsive themes? Most current themes shouldn’t need JetPack’s mobile at all.

Now-a-days themes have built in mobile themes. Is the Jetpack mobile theme displaying or your themes mobile theme?

Hmm… maybe that is the problem. I’ll try to disable the Jetpack Mobile theme and see what happens.

    Let us know the results!
