you can put your adsense code anywhere you want ad to appear…like in header, footer, after post title..anywhere.
you can also put it in sidebar…drag text to the sidebar..put adsense code and save it. ad will appear on your sidebar after some time.
like if you want it ad to appear after header..open your header.php file and put adsense code right before</head>

It’s not a good idea to modify theme files except using a child theme – as those changes will be lost when the theme is updated.

i know that…thnx for telling anyways…so what if i want to put ad after header w/o using any plugin? i m really not a fan of plugins and new to WP.
p.s.- i am using a child theme
Depends on your theme – you should ask on the forum specific to your theme.
