no Checkboxes in iOS and Android

we made some forms which work fine on the desktop but there are no checkboxes on mobile devices (iOS and Android), only empty spots, what we tried is:
.wpcf7-select {
-webkit-appearance: checkbox;
}

but that makes no difference, any help would be apreciated
