There’s always a chance that updating something on your site may cause problems. That’s one reason why you should backup your site before updating. But the more important question is why are you using an outdated version of WP – that’s major security risk.

Indeed, I’m definitely willing to update my wordpress version. However, I haven’t done so because of the problems that may arise after the update – from what I can read, some files might be lost, there might be incompatibilities with some plugins, the design of the website might be lost, etc.
What’s your opinion on that?
I do regular backups of my website.
Any of those things are possible – as to how likely, it depends on the plugins and theme that you are using. I’d suggest checking as to the compatibility of your theme and plugins so you have more relevant info on that.
And the risk of getting hacked and the huge hassle and mess that results, is far worse than sorting out a few update glitches :)!
