    Hello,

I am a little confused with setting up my own self-hosted website.

Recently, I decided that it was best to stop using wordpress.com and start a new website via wordpress.org. This way I will have full control and will be able to monetize my future content much better. I then decided that Bluehost was the best service for me to self-host my wordpress.org website. I signed up for BlueHost and installed wordpress via the CPANEL. Now for my question.

    Is there a difference between:

    #1-installing wordpress vis Bluehost
#2-installing wordpress via wordpress.org and connecting to bluehost?

What does mysql and php how to do with installing wordpress.org?

I just want to make sure I am running wordpress.org and NOT .com but that I am using the BlueHost webserver since I am running from a laptop and dont have a server of my own.

    Thank you in advance!

  • WordPress.ORG does not host any sites – so your #2 doesn’t exist :). Your Bluehost site absolutely does run the WP.ORG version of WP.

The only other option that may be confusing is that it is possible to install WordPress on your laptop – but that won’t be accessible on the internet or be connected to your Bluehost site at all.

So yes, installing via BH is what you want to be doing!

    Thank you!

My assumption is that by downloading wordpress.org directly onto my laptop that I can use a 3rd party such as bitnami to “play with” my website offline?

I’ve done that in the past when I was teaching myself how to use wordpress.COM without ruining my old website I had on wordpress.COM

    Can you confirm my assumption?

Yep, absolutely! Sounds like you already know how to do that, but here’s the link if not:

Thank you! I have marked this topic as resolved.

You’re welcome and welcome to the .ORG world too :)!

One last question, although I already marked the conversation as resolved.

Do you have any quick links available to some plugin suggestions and tips for first-time .ORG users?

The last thing I want to to is slow down my website from downloading incorrect or too many plugins and extras.

No problem – it’s good to be somewhat cautious about plugins, but there’s really no way to know ahead of time which ones may be problematic because it can be due to a number of factors. And many won’t slow your site down at all. It’s one of those “it depends” kind of answers :)!

Are there particular functionalities you want to add to your site now? When you’re looking at various plugins, I’d suggest looking at the support forum and reviews (obviously these are subjective…) as well as the number of downloads and how recently updated.

I always take subjectivity with a grain of salt and establish my own opinions. Thank you for the help. Unfortunately I dont have any questions at the moment towards specific functionalities because I need to establish a set website model.

Right now my attempt is to create a personal website for myself, where I can publish blog posts and establish a subscription base. I am young and wish to be a motivational/leadership speaker one day. They always say you should have started yesterday when you have an idea, so thats what I am doing.

Any further questions, I’ll make to polish my thoughts before submitting to the forums.
