Limiting amount of posts on main page

    I am working on a new theme, and on the index, I want to limit the number of posts shown to only 5. But on the rest of the pages (archives, etc.) I want the number of posts shown to be what is set in the options…

    is this possible? I have been tweaking with it for awhile now with no luck…
