I have a blog in which I cite news articles from say MSNBC, Google News, Reuters, New York Times, etc..

My question is about permissions/copyrights, am I allowed to use the article as long as I link the source?

  • Well just checking the New York Times copyright notice says you can’t reproduce content in any manner without permission. Expect that most other site would say the same.

I know but for big sites, like PrisonPlanet.tv and tons of other blogs, I’m assuming its not OK to even summarize the article yourself and have a couple of excerpts?

    It’s not like I’m not sourcing them…

Your best bet is to summarize in your own words, like just a few lines and then link to the article in discussion. Some sites let you do excerpts, but the majority of the larger ones do not in any manner. You’ll find that a lot of people do post news content, just keep in mind that chances are they don’t have permission to do so. By doing so, they take the risk of lawsuits, etc.
