It is expected, but remember that it’s because you’re running a NETWORK of sites that are all managed by myblog.org

But they don’t have permissions at myblog.org. So this all gets really confusing for them. They get errors that don’t make sense and they really struggle to reset their passwords.

They shouldn’t get an error. They should get a message saying they don’t have access to the site, with a list of what they DO have access to.

Or on subfolders, IIRC it redirects you to your site.

Right, I think most users would consider “You don’t have permission to see this” an error.

I guess I’ll have to find a work around. Honestly this just fundamentally doesn’t make sense to me.

It assumes that the users of a sub site understand that it’s part of a network. Most of my users never see the network. They engage with the subs site that interests them, where they register, log in, etc. They aren’t even aware of the network at all. And they shouldn’t have to be.

It would make so much more sense to structure password recovery around the user’s primary blog instead of the network blog.

I’ve looked at some login configuration plugins, none fully address this.

Yeah, I can see that pov.

Right NOW the point of Multisite is multiple sites on a shared network. So the assumption is, yes, people know they’re on a network of managed sites. The best way to explain it would be “Your site is hosted on mydomain.com so all password resets come from us….”

https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/21352 has some more info on it.

That sort of makes sense. And it makes more sense for editors, authors, and admins. But I think it makes very little sense for subscribers. Their engagement with a site is fairly limited and superficial.

The change I’m talking about (using the user’s primary blog instead of the network blog) would still make perfect sense for authors, editors and admins. And it would remove much of the confusion subscribers experience.

Thanks for taking the time to hear me out.

VFH I’m having similar problems. The link posted by Mika had solved the problem until the recent upgrade to 4.0+

    I found a possible solution here https://wordpress.org/support/topic/multisite-forgot-password-link-navigates-to-the-primary-blog-not-the-current?replies=14

But after creating the plugin with the recommended code it does not appear to work as described. Still looking for a solution.
