• Install Instruction #2 Create a database for WordPress on your web server, as well as a MySQL user who has all privileges for accessing and modifying it

My Mac is great and it is 10 years old and a little slow.

Should I install database and web server on it? Do I have to? I’m afraid the slowness of my Mac will show when I install server software on it.

I presume there is an alernative, to run this stuff on the website, but no doubt that will limit what WP can do locally.

    Guidance?

  • If you don’t use a local database your PC will need to have a connection to the database server available any time that you want ot use the site. If you’re on a local network that’s not a problem most times, but if you’re ever doing anything mobile, it can be a whole lot more difficult.

As a bit of a guide, I recently gave up my old Powerbook G4, and I had a MAMP stack installed on that for development, and for normal DB use it was fine. It only bogged down when it was doing some pretty complex queries (like calculating and sorting for ~ 1,000,000 records). For a relatively normal WordPress site it may be a little slower then a proper web server, but it won’t be that bad.

    That’s inspiring, thank you.

On the other hand, even Model B of the Raspberry Pi is unbearable to use for WordPress development, because it takes 7-15 seconds every time you click anything in the WordPress Admin panels.

I tracked it down to processor speed (processor was flat out at 100% utilization the entire 7-15 seconds).
