Adding header images via media library

Hi all,

I have posts that allow for custom headers and I am also using a plugin to allow posts and pages to have different headers. Now, when make a new post or page I need to go to Appearance > header to upload the new header image then reselect the default image just to keep it in check, even selecting it from the media library but it does the same effect.

Is there a way to mark an image in the media library as a header image without the current header image changing?
