I don’t know what you’ve tried so here’s a list:
– take a backup, this could get heavy
– Admin page > Appearance > Customise: ensure that front page displays is set to static front page, and the static front page is set to a page that exists in your page list. Try a different page.
– reset permalinks, go to Admin page > Settings > Permalinks, click “Save changes”
– deactivate all plugins, if the problem resolves, reactivate plugins one by one to try to identify the one that’s causing the conflict
– try the default TwentyFourteen theme to be able to rule out a theme problem
– if you reached this point you may have an incomplete or corrupted WordPress install. Go to Admin page > Dashboard > Update: “Install now”
Thanks for the information. Is there a way to go back to a previous revision and then start over? Thanks for your time.
Theoretically that’s possible but not recommended practice since it would be keeping bugs and security flaws which are now fixed.
I think I caused the problem initially by copying and pasting the updates that I wanted to make from Word. I have tried all of your suggestions and nothing works. It seems that if I could just go back to the way the site was prior to me make the changes, I could start over and make my updates properly. I have been working on this for 2 days and my knowledge is extremely beginner.
Copying and pasting update from Word might at worst make the page formatting look a bit off, but should not lose the page altogether.
Yes if you have a good backup of files and database it should be possible to restore that and then update properly.
There’s a couple more debug steps to try though I’m not hopeful. An apparently inactive plugin can still have an effect, so rename the wp-content/plugins folder. And you could try a database repair. Run this url and follow the instructions:

Other than that you probably need to start over with a new database and fresh downloads of WordPress, theme and plugins. Ensure you have copies of your current page text and images. This may well be quicker than the time you spent already.
