css specificity in custom.css – or change original css

Firstly – I love your calendar – no regrets there.
But – none of my custom.css changes to the legend have any effect whatsoever so this must be down to my specificity – though I thought i’d been quite specific – even down to page-slugs. Though you have used !important in your base css so how can I override that?
If I change your original css – might this be upset by future updates? if the answer is yes, I don’t want the palava of tweaking again after every update – so could you advise the best way to target the legend margin/padding/text-size so my changes are effected – or anyone point me to a relevant article so i can learn. I’m reasonably au fait with css.
