tinymce editor/button broken in WP 4.0

This is probably not news: The window which si popped up from the WP editor and used to insert a shortcode into a post is broken in version 4.0. The window pops up (though the display is a bit off). But the “Insert” button does not work – the window just stays there staring at you.
The initial reason appear to be that the call to tinyMCE.execInstanceCommand fails (albeit quietly) in tinymce/window.php.
The larger problem is that there have been big changes with tinmymce and its having benn moved into the core of WP with version 4.0. There is quite a good write-up here: https://make.wordpress.org/core/2014/01/18/tinymce-4-0-is-in-core/
