    Hello,

permalinks are reporting 404 error after installing Polylang. After unsuccessful debugging, I’ve installed a clean WordPress 4.0 and made it a multisite.

After installing only Polylang and no other plugins or themes, permalinks are not working. In case of blog posts, it doesn’t work if I choose post name permalink. And in case of pages, all of permalink options are reporting 404, except for standard (?p=123) option.

Permalinks do work if I choose default language in Settings->Languages options. But that is not good behaviour, since we don’t want to force all of our users (new sites) to use Polylang, and in that case permalinks do not work by default after opening new site.

If you want, you can contact me in PM and I’ll give you access so you can testi it out.

    Best regards

    Hi!

After installing only Polylang and no other plugins or themes, permalinks are not working.

What about your theme? Are your tests done with Twenty twelve or a custom theme?

Yes, we tested it with Twenty twelve and Twenty fourteen. There are no other themes installed or activated. Still no luck. Can we do something more?

    Thanks

    Can you give a link?

Is Polylang active on your website? I see no evidence of it.
Can you install the plugin “Rewrite Rules Inspector” and check your rewrite rules for posts and pages?

No, it’s not active, and that is the problem. It is network activated.

we don’t want to force all of our users (new sites) to use Polylang, and in that case permalinks do not work by default after opening new site.

Rewrite rules for Post1 and Page2 are here.

So why it is networked activated? If you want each user being able to choose, then you should make it available but not network activated.

We have WP multisite setup with Network Plugins.

Yes I understand. But you have the choice to activate the plugin for everybody (network activated) or to activate it per individual site (if you leave it de-activated on the network admin)

    Thread Starter bajro

    (@bajro)

Yes, it works in that way. Thank you!
But it is only workaround because now users should ask network admin for plugin activation. Is that the only way?

Sure not. You can activate the plugins menu (go in network settings, at the bottom). This allows all users to activate/de-activate plugins for their site. If you want more control, I guess that a plugin such as https://wordpress.org/plugins/multisite-plugin-manager/ would help you (never tested it though).

Yes, I understand. Above mentioned solution will be just fine. Thanks!
