Can a plugin set a post excerpt?

    If so, how?

    Example:
    I wrote a simple gallery plugin that shows a photo gallery, and uses a shortcode to implement it.
    The shortcode allows for a caption – is there a way to use that caption value to set as the post’s excerpt in some manner?
