Your mac is extracting the .zip files automatically. So you will see a folder named wordpress. If it doesn’t extract automatically then you should extract the file with name in the format “wordpress-x.0.zip”, where x is the version number.

My next question is then: what do I do with the files to make them “come to life”? I can´t find any “execute”-file or similar to get it up and running… I guess I should´ve understood it from the intro at WordPress but I just don´t…
Are you trying to install WP on your mac? If so you have two choices
1) do a google search for installing MAMP on your mac and follow it up
2) Do a manually install and edit the OSX files you can run php and mysql and turn on websharing. (google all this it has all been written up)
If you are trying to install it on a host, you need to FTP the files to the root folder where your domain name points to.

OK! Suddenly after having downloaded MAMP (have no clear idea if I have startet using it) I can edit my WordPress-website/blog via Safari and the website adress (I have miracoulously managed to log in). Is this another way of editing/administering my wordpress website/-blog instead of installing on my own computer (mac) and using FTP, TExt-editor, MySQL, cPanel and so on?
Really feel like I´m flying a plane without any license right now…
PS! I´ve also downloaded Bitnami and given this program some required info about the wordpress website/-blog.
1) are you planning on only running your site on your local computer? i.e. it will be a local site that even you won’t be able to access away from home
I’m having the same problem as Mr. Larssen except that I’m running Win 8.1. I can download Painter and get a zip file which I can unzip, but then I get a folder with no .exe file anywhere [I looked through all the subfolders]. In WP I can find a way to add themes, but it won’t accept any of the file in the unzipped painter.2.5 folder. Help please.
if you are installing a new theme in WP you point to the xxxxx.zip file – WordPress will unzip it and install all the pieces.
juggledad: If I understand you correctly; no. I am planning to run and publish publicly. But the weird thing is that I can do that now. That´s what makes me wonder. From work experience I have learnt that you can edit websites through a browser as an administrator, etc. Is that the kind of solution I´ve accidentally reached now?
If you plan to run pubically, you install WP on your host (WestHost, BlueHost, Host Mosster etc – in my opinion avoid godaddy).
once you have installed it there you access the backend by using your
http://domain.com/wp-admin
