• I want to report a problem with the media library. When an image or document is uploaded through the WP media upload, WP generates an address to the upload: ex ….wp-content/uploads/2013/01… When I upload, the address is not the correct year or month and the item is not even in the folder designated. Nor I can find where the item did go. I get around this by ftp to the address generated or I change the address and ftp to that. But I should not have to do this of course. The WP upload is not working properly.

I don’t even know whether I want to take the time to correct it. But you may have heard of this before and know just what to do.

Is your current date and time reported properly at Settings -> General in your blog’s Dashboard?

Yes, the date and time is correct in the settings.

When I upload a document or image the address is always wrong. And randomly wrong – not the same each time.

Try disabling all of your plugins. Does the file get placed in the proper upload directory with all plugins disabled?

Made no difference. Last summer I upgraded my weaver theme to weaver ii and then moved the web site to another server. That’s when this anomaly appeared.

I just now noticed that the “featured image” option doesn’t work. in the page header.

And, I don’t know where the featured image is stored???

Hm, interesting. Let’s rule-out the theme upgrade.

Does it work properly with the Twenty Fourteen theme active?

Do you mean – change themes and see if the image upload works properly?

I am reluctant to do this for fear of losing my current settings. I can do this safely right?

    I will investigate and do.

Yes, it can be done safely and is a necessary troubleshooting step.

It made no difference. I just went to the themes page, saved current settings, activated 2014 theme… ? Tried to upload image…

The upload media mechanism does not work. When used, the image does not appear in the media library or in the page. The dir address that WP produces does not contain the imgage.

But when the image is uploaded manually to the WP designated directory, the image does appear in the page but not in the media library.

The WP address is not the current month and year – just a random year and month.

My media library has a lot of little X boxes. This is not right. Something went amok here.

Hm, yes, that is very odd.

Try downloading WordPress again and delete then replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings. Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

    (@msfrankie)

OK – Why not? Delete then Replace. I’ll report back when I’m done.

Excellent, please let us know how it went!

It’s been a long time since last post but I discovered the problem.

I noticed a folder in the main directory with the name of the site. Inside this folder was another wp-content folder but no other files. Inside was uploads and inside that year/mo …etc. This is where some of the images ended up.

There were two wp-content/uploads/year/mo folders !!! No wonder WordPress was confused. Perhaps this occurred when I switched hosts???

I need to remove this duplicate folder but first I have to check that every image in the duplicate is covered in the original uploads folder. To compensate, sometimes I manually put the images where they were supposed to be and sometimes I just changed the address to where WP said they were. What a mess.

Anyway, when I resolve the addresses/images and REMOVE the second folder, the media upload system should work. Surely this is the problem.

Too bad I didn’t spot this folder right after the problem started.

The folder was removed, but it’s back. My host says WP is creating it because of an upload_path set in the database and if I remove it, WP will revert to the default. I will try it.

My question is: Why did WP start to do this in the first place?

    Will keep you posted.
