• I am using wordpress on http://www.nesat.net which only uses sftp using an ssh key.

I want to install and upgrade plugins, but it appears that you are required to enter your ftp login to install the plugins. Is there a way to install and upgrade plugins by manually uploading the files instead of having wordpress handle the entire process?

  • Yes. You can download the lugins file and then un-zip the plugin on your local P, thenand FTP the files into the /wp-content/pluigns/ folder. Then they’ll appear (inactive) in the plugins list in your admin area.

You can install the plugins easily without using ftp. Go to admin panel>plugins>add new on top of the page. Select the plugin that you download and install. That is all.

As catacaustic mentioned you may use FTP to upload the plugins manually and then activate them from your admin Dashboard. However, the fact that you cannot install plugins the regular way indicates issues with the current setup of your web server or PHP handler. Keep in kind that other issues may also be related to the setup of the server – WP should be able to create new files (extract plugins or themes, etc.) – you should check the case with you web hosting provider.
