Image presentation plugin question

There are several blogs I’ve visited that, when one clicks on the images, rather than opening in an entirely new window, they open in a smooth, animated fasion in their own borderless window. For instance, check out this page:

Is that a specific plugin or is it a result of the theme that is used…or something else I’m overlooking?
