@tsemmes, the description of your issue is not clear, and it is not clear why you’ve created an album if you want a slideshow.
@tsemmes – It may be better for you to create a “homepage” gallery and use the “Copy to…” function to add the images from the other galleries you want to use in it.
Then you can simply display the “homepage” gallery in your slideshow.
Otherwise, as @tizz suggested, we could use more information on what you are trying to achieve.
Thanks!

This may be a confusion over terminology. I was understanding Gallery as a repository for unorganized images, like the Media Library, and Album as the place for a select group of images taken from the Gallery. The Album in iPhoto serves this purpose which is where I got that idea. But if I understand this right, in NextGen the Gallery is a place for a select group of images and Albums are groups of Galleries. Almost the opposite of how I understood it! There is no comparable to a Media Library. It makes sense once I know the terms but if there is any suggestion box this idea could be stored in, I think that a very basic Getting Started guide for NextGen would be really helpful.

Yes it is.
Here the documentation.
Thanks, @tizz.
