Ive made my wordpress website ( first ever and proud of it) and can view it on my imac. However when I do a search on any other computer nothing comes up. I’ve tried searching all combinations – what I think is the exact web address etc.

I’ve been working on a wordpress website for the past 24hrs – with a 1 year old in tow so feel a bit fried..any suggestions welcome

  • Did you make your site on your iMac using something like MAMP, XAMPP, etc.?
If so, this is why you cannot find it on another computer.

Short answer (there are ways to do so with the above-mentioned local servers, but that is beyond the scope of this post), in order to do so, you have to buy a domain and a hosting account and then copy your local site to the hosting account.

    Hi Lyle,

A big thanks for the reply.

So I followed steps to set up a domain and to host it on hostgator.

I’ve set up all the pages and all the while I kept going from the dashboard to the menu to the ‘visit site’ menu to check it was all looking ok. It all seemed to be fine but then when I try and open the website from another computer I cannot find any sign of the website.

Other info that may help clarify…..

I’ve been using twenty twelve theme.

I have set up 7 pages including the homepage. All the pages I’ve been producing using the ‘pages’ tab. Apart from the home page.

For the homepage I used ‘dashboard’ and then a button ‘customise your site’ which gave me access to the header, images etc. This customised homepage has then appeared in the ‘pages’ section of the dashboard. I think I deleted the original ‘home’ from the ‘pages’ section. I’m wondering if the issues lies somewhere here?

I’ve also created a new menu in the ‘appearance / menu ‘ tab. Again this may be a possible cause of the hiccup.

I was following some general on line advice on setting up a website but went off piste because the advice didn’t match with the updated version of wordpress that I’m using.

Any further advice would be much appreciated,

Good to hear that you have it hosted and were able to get it started. Would you mind posting the URL so that we may check it out at this end?

If you purchased the domain and hosting from HG, and did so just recently (within the last 24 – 48 hours or so), then it could be just a matter of the domain name being fully propagated on the web, as it can take this amount of time to do so; this is normal.

    Hi Lyle,

I’ve just been speaking to my brother in law – appears that I’ve been really dumb. The website is up and running but I’ve been trying to search for it in google…..he’s explained the whole are of web optimisation – wow.

So my website looks fine ( I think) although the web address is a bit long according to my brother in law ( I agree)……it’s for a small part of my work so I may not change it.

    For info it’s http://www.livingwillownorthwest.com

Lyle – even though I’ve sorted my problem I do hugely thank you for your responses. I’ve had a bit of a deadline sprung on me to sort this ASAP and with a little one I was getting a bit frazzled.

    Martin
