@chambrai – Have you checked for conflicts with all of your active plugins? Do you see this issue if you temporarily switch to a default WordPress Twenty series theme?

I am a little afraid of switching off the default theme as I might lose certain settings. However the problem only appeared when I upgraded the software. Could it be a bug in the new software? Will the PRO version solve this problem?
@chambrai – Unfortunately I cannot control what your theme may or may not keep in its settings but if it has been coded to current WordPress best practices it should be minimal if any at all settings that would be “lost”.
Switching themes is a standard practice when troubleshooting as well. See this codex article for some additional reference: http://codex.wordpress.org/Managing_Plugins#Troubleshooting
Thanks!

Changed theme as you suggested. Disabled a few plugins which could interfare and I reset all Nextgen Settings. I also upgraded to Nextgen PRO however same problem (Page 404 error) still appears when clicking on Page 2 of the thumbnail gallery.
@chambrai – Thank you for subscribing to NextGEN Pro although there would have been no expectation for it to correct the issue you are describing.
Currently if there are no conflicts that are influencing this issue then you may need to use the work-around of setting the number of thumbnails per page to zero (0) under Gallery > Gallery Settings > NextGEN Basic Thumbnails.
This will “remove” the pagination navigation so your readers will not be able to click on one of the links and be lead to a 404 page.
Thanks!
