Can't connect to database

I’ve created a custom template which includes PHP for the purpose of connecting to and querying an SQL database, but it will not connect. I know that there’s nothing wrong with the code itself because I copied it and pasted it from a stand-alone page that is working just fine. Does anyone know a reason that my code would not work when ported to wordpress using a custom template?
