Main menu section background

I have a background-color on the masthead. Site-title on the left and menu on the right. The bar at the top of the menu which changes as each page is selected: the unselected strip of colour is white but I want it to be the masthead background colour. I have tried dozens of different selectors but cannot find one that will remove the white colour. Thanks
