• Hello, sometimes, I will find my site’s posts either redirecting to the homepage or resulting in a 404 error. The permalink structure is at post name.

I’m able to get it back to normal after disabling all my plugins, switching themes, and reseting the permalink structure. But after a couple hours, I will find it not working again, and I don’t know the cause of this error.

Is it possible for some “internal” thing to go wrong? What are the possible causes for this? Could it be the .htaccess file, a database/myphpadmin problem, ftp problem, plugin, or theme problem?

I want to figure out the cause of this, so next time it happens again, I might have a better chance at fixing it.

I’ve also received a message on my webmaster tools account saying I have some “possible outages” because of the “soft 404 errors” the web crawlers found on my site, which must explain the decreased search engine traffic for the past couple of days.

Any help or advice is great.

    Thanks,

    Grace

  • Hi Grace,

Is your site in multiple languages? If so, are any of the languages in something other than a Latin character set?

    Hi Don,

No I don’t think my site is in multiple languages. I haven’t done anything manually to the site to make it support multiple languages, however some people may be seeing the site’s content in their own language, because I saw a one user reading the content in a foreign language on a screen tracking application hooked up with the site.

I have been reading up on this, and I think I’ve identified the problem as “soft 404 errors” or “200 responses”. (Article on that here.)

Does anybody have any explanations or information regarding soft 404 errors? Like what causes them? And how can they be fixed?

Great! Hope you’ve solved your problem. If you have please post that it is solved here so the moderators can mark this as resolved.
