    Hello,,

Without any coding, is there a way I can create a page and make that page the default page to open when someone visits the blog? I can’t rename “Home” into something else because I don’t even see the “Home” page listed under “Pages”…

I tried using Static pages but “Home” Isn’t on the list of pages and it won’t even let me click on Home.

    Help!

  • Upgrade to 2.1 and then you can set any static page to the default homepage in the admin area without doing any coding.

Thank you and I already have 2.1. For some reason when I do that, the same exact way you just described, here is what happens…I lose the Home page with the posts in it. I can see it and it’s there, but when I click on “Home” I can’t get anything. Here is the site.

Any help would be appreciated, I assure you..

    Thanks

First of all I would never use a theme without a Page template – if you want to take advantage of the “make a Page the front” feature. (Having the contact form on a main page looks weird).

Does that theme have hardcoded links in the top tab menu?

Well, The only reason the page has a contact form is only because I was using it for an example. I will take it out now. The thing I was emphasizing was that if you click on “Home”, you don’t get the blog pages, or the page where the posts are…

    I honestly don’t know what a page template is…

As for that theme have hardcoded links in the top tab menu?
I don’t know what those are too..

    I think so..
Misty look is a very popular theme from what I know..

    Thanks
    Jim

EDIT: and additional.. I changed the theme and noticed that “Home” disappeared… I then add a blank page called “Main” and make that page the Posts page and everything works.. Not as nice as I’d like it to look but at least everything works.. I just have to find another theme with a customizable header as easy to use as MistyLook..

    Thanks
    Jim

OK, let’s forget the code part and get back to the basics!
    1. If you set a Page (read: Pages) as the main/front/home page of your blog – that should NOT display posts.

In the Options > Reading admin subpanel you have two (2) fields:
for “Front page” (the idea is NOT to display posts but a “static Page”!) and for “Posts page” <== this one should display your posts… what is usually on an index.

So, my question: what are your settings?

[popular or not, a theme should have a Page template that doesn’t display the comment form. Period]

    Moshi,

I think it’s all set now. I set the front page to be the “About Us” page and the posts page to be the “Main Page” The “Main” page was simply a blank page I made, no posts allowed or commenting. I think “MistyLook is not compatable with 2.1, at least not fully.. Please look at my site again. The only thing I need to do is now figure out how I can make another page with only the post of only one catagory. I saw many posts on this subject but some of those posts are old and I don’t know which are still relevant..

    Thanks
    Jim

I am not sure I understand the “one category” question. Clicking on any of the category names in the sidebar it takes you exactly to that: a view (a “webpage” if you wish) that displays ONLY posts from that category. What else do you need?

(and if you don’t mind, here is a friendly advice: make that Main page shorter, otherwise all the visitors will run away… either dislpay only excerpts or less posts – as it is with zillion pictures it is very heavy and takes a long time to fully display. Not a user-friendly solution)

I don’t mind any advice at all..

What do you see when you go to my site? I set it up so it would show “About Us”.. Not the actual posts themselves. It’s unfinished. anyway…

It seems like Kubrick is the only theme I can find that I can use.. All the others have “Home” but I can’t find “Home” in the dropdown list when I am at Admin/Options/Reading/ and then I try to set a static page. I wanted to totally delete “Home” so I can make my own Posts age..
    I hope I’m making sense..
    Jim

Well, I don’t think all the more than 1,000 themes except K. have the “Home” link hardcoded πŸ™‚

If that’s your only concern: it should be in the header.php template file of the theme and should be easily edited/deleted.

Yes, I see the Page (About) that you set as main/front… but I am a curios type and clicked on the “Main” πŸ™‚

Oh, well, I changed the title of main to… blog.. That should be more relevant..
I guess I oughta start looking at the 999 themes then..

    Just kidding and thanks
    Jim
