Not the best suggestion, but try using a plugin like Jetpack that will let you set the featured image of the page as thumbnail image for the share on FB. I think SEO by Yoast also does this.
I decided to try out Yoast. Thank you, but it appears that Yoast will do like some other plugins will do: insert a default image on pages that don’t already have an image. I have a header image site-wide. It shows that header image. The header image won’t fit in the little box provded by Facebook. I need to use an alternative logo, which is already in my WordPress.
Okay, Thanks. I’m not finding the answer I was hoping for. I’ve tried many different plugins to no effect. I’ll settle for a workaround. My 180×180 logo works as the Facebook thumbnail but it only seems to work when I use it as my header image. I included the larger horizontal rectangle logo (the one I would rather have as the header image) in a sidebar. Until I figure out a better way, this will work.
Maybe not an answer, but perhaps something to try. I’m not convinced Facebook understands CSS, I think it is picking up cues for which image to use from HTML alone. Perhaps you leave the HTML as you have it, but use CSS to move the images around in the browser so the desirable sidebar image shows up where the header should be and the “header” logo goes elsewhere. Worth a try?
You said,
“Perhaps you leave the HTML as you have it, but use CSS to move the images around in the browser…”
It does rely heavily on CSS. I suppose it is worth a try, but I tried something else that seems to be working–at least so far. The logo I wanted was truncating into a square box on the Facebook “Status Updates” because of its horizontal shape. So I put a square logo in there but designated my “Featured Image” as the horizontal logo. When that didn’t work, I put the horizontal logo back into the header where I originally wanted it, but changed I the shape of the image by expanding the canvas of the image to make the overall image square. I now have a horizontal logo suspended inside a square image. Everything is “transparent” in the square except for my horizontal logo. Facebook accepted the whole image and displayed it correctly! Now I have to figure out whether I want the logo to float to the top of the square, stay in the middle, or sink to the bottom of the square. I’m trying all three to see which looks best.
