How to Raise Side Bar Menu

    I am using the 2012 theme for my web site and I want to raise the side bar menu so that it falls just under the menu at the top of the page. Also, will these changes be removed during a theme update? If so, what can I do make these changes permanent?

    It may help to know that I am new to WordPress, HTML and CSS coding.
