Question about .htaccess file

    Hi!

    I’m about to upgrade from WP 1.5 to WP 2.1 (I know, I’m late), and all the documentation and tutorials insist on backing up the .htaccess file. I couldn’t find one in my root folder (and yes, I’ve tried changing preferences in my FTP tool(s), and I can even see another htaccess file in one of my photo gallery folders), and I couldn’t find anything about it in the WP 2.1 installation instructions. I read in this thread (http://wordpress.org/support/topic/81627?replies=5)that not all installs have one.

    My question is: Is the .htaccess file absolutely necessary?

    If it’s not, it would save a lot of trouble to people like me if it were specified in the upgrade instructions that the file might not exist at all in the root folder of earlier versions.

    The .htaccess file is not necessary. It is just the file that you can use permalinks (fancy URL’s with if you so choose to do so). If you don’t use them, there will be no file as you would have to create it! No problems! Good feedback on the documentation!

    I ended up spending two hours last night downloading new FTP clients just in case the ones I already had wouldn’t show the “precious” htaccess file. Now I can upgrade without fear! 😉

    Your more than welcome! Upgrading to 2.1, please read the docs as that is killing so many people! Good luck!

    Thank you for your so nicely worded post. I had the exact same problem including the part where you downloaded new FTP clients just in case the ones you use don’t work. (as he laughs at himself. . .)
