Backup has been working each week since April but today I got a notice to download the latest backup, clicked the link in the email which took me to our site’s backup plugin page. The list of backups (about 12 of the most recent) were listed in order with today’s backup at the top. Clicking the download link on any of the backups in the list gets a 404 error.

After further manual poking around this morning I found this directory in my wp-content directory: backupwordpress-d0b7d0dbb5-backups

Inside that were all my backups and a .backup-warning file with this:

    ‘{“php”:{“850a725f3d5845c61525a8e56ff0a28d”:”Undefined index: pdf_company_information, \/home\/raving\/public_html\/cat\/wp-content\/plugins\/wpa-pdf-invoice\/classes\/class-pdf-functions-class.php, 118″,”1992431571a7ec0a287d0297ec3d831d”:”Undefined index: pdf_registered_office, \/home\/raving\/public_html\/cat\/wp-content\/plugins\/wpa-pdf-invoice\/classes\/class-pdf-functions-class.php, 120″}}’

Why the backup plugin would suddenly change the name of the backup directory because some other plugin had an error is beyond my expertise but it seems a backup plugin should respond more gracefully to unexpected problems. My local hard drive backup software often encounters problems, like bad blocks or locked files, and simply notes them in a log and soldiers on.

I have no idea how to get back my normal backup directory without deleting this directory, reinstalling the plugin and starting from scratch. This is the third time I’ve encountered problems with this plugin (see my other support posts) but hey, it’s free, so what can I expect?

I went to delete the backupwordpress plugin and reinstall it but now everything works. No more error messages and I can download all the backups. The backup directory still has the odd name “backupwordpress-d0b7d0dbb5-backups”

rather than the name noted in the readme: “Backups are stored on your server in /wp-content/backups.”

I don’t know if the developer can fix things remotely or whether this was simply some kind of glitch on my server. Since I got no repsonse here, I will probably never know.

Another week, another problem. Got the notification mail last night that a download of the backup was ready but clicking on the link on the backup page gets a 404 error again.

I went into the oddly named backup folder “backupwordpress-d0b7d0dbb5-backups” with an FTP program and I can download it from there with FTP without a problem. Noticed a lot of “database” entries also in that same directory. Some have the date of the backup but some have a date a few days before. Not sure what that’s about.

All in all, I’m looking for a new WordPress backup program as this seems very flaky.

    Hi There,

Sorry no one has got back to you sooner.

I’d love to touch base with you about your current issues. We use Intercom to handle our support, and there’s an ‘enable support’ button on the backups panel in your WordPress Admin. If you enable it, we’ll be better able to debug the issue.

    Alternatively you can email support@hmn.md.

    Cheers!
    Owain
