Splitting Categories by Parents

On a site I’m building there are two parent categories, ‘Category’ (with child categories such as ‘blog’ and ‘news’) and ‘Publication’ (with child categories like ‘BBC’, ‘The Guardian’ etc).
I’m trying to make it so that each Parent has its own Category drop down filter (using the standard WP category widget), but I need them both to be able to update with new child categories as and when they’re added by the site admin. Is this something that is possible using this plugin please? It looked as though it would do just the job, but all my attempts to do this have resulted in having two drop downs that both show all of the child categories together, minus the parents. Any ideas please??! Thanks
