    Hi the site I have built has just gone live in the last 2-3 weeks and already we are getting spam on the contact us page – this is using the Fast Secure Contact Form with a Captcha and have Akismet turned on to mark as spam but I can’t believe that a new site is already being targetted – how do they identify new WP sites?

  • The spammers and other such attackers may not know you’re running a WordPress site. They may have found you by means of an automated trawling exercise over a block of IP addresses and yours was one of them. I see many attacks across all my sites and it’s a daily task to stay one step ahead of them.

    Yes, I’m the kind of guy that reads log files, a lot!

    I have a test blog on a domain which has nothing else on it.
    It has never made a post, I have never linked to it, I have never clicked a link from it.
    It took a few weeks but the spammers found it and now visit regularly.

    And they will target new sites and hope their ‘vanity spam’ will be approved by the new blogger:
